approved for funding this coming year. Without further ado:
New
Hope Solebury Education Fund
Approved and Funded 2010-11 grants
Nurturing
Literacy and Science
Proposed
by Brown, Rogers,
Gonzales & Rader
The
Nurturing Literacy and Science proposal will encourage the
developmental understanding of the local ecological environment in
grades K – 2 through an innovative approach to integrating science
and literacy. By combining a visit by an author of environmental
science books with hands-on outdoor investigations of the local
environment, authentic reading and writing tied to the science
curriculum will occur and student interest in and understanding of
life cycle concepts will increase.
Stony
Brook Watershed Field Trip
Proposed
by Jeremy Pfancook
The purpose of this proposed project is to
help students in the 9th grade environmental science course to expand
their knowledge of watersheds and how they contribute to water
resource health. Classroom learning will come alive on this field
trip. Students will experience first-hand how to utilize correct
scientific sampling techniques and how to analyze and summarize the
results of chemical and biological sampling. In addition, students
will discuss local water issues and conservation methods.
Exterior
wall mural
Proposed
by Stephen Young, teachers and students
The
Exterior Wall Mural project will implement a collaborative design
project and create a mural for the wall of the outdoor reading area
at the high school library. The execution of the mural will involve:
collaboration among students, faculty, and a professional artist;
group exploration of the linkage between design and the visual
representation of literacy values; and group execution of artistic
plans, particularly through student contribution. This project is a
creative endeavor that promotes group dialogue, deliberation, problem
solving, and execution.
iTouch
Learning Lab
Proposed
by Karen Rosenburg
The
purposes of the iTouch Learning Lab are to (1) enhance the existing
academic, special needs, and ESL curriculum at the lower elementary
school by using innovative technology, and (2) promote technology
education at the high school level and connection among the schools
by teaching high school students to develop applications that will
then be used at the lower elementary school. This project uses
state-of-the-art technology in an inventive, creative, and
collaborative way to benefit classroom learning in the lower
elementary school and the high school.
New
Hope-Solebury Read the World
Proposed
by Mary Schwander
NH-S
Read the World evolved from an Education Fund grant for an author
visit into a series of community-wide events that celebrated many
aspects of African culture. This proposal will continue the
collaboration between the school, the community library and the
Education Fund focusing on a geographic region that aligns with the
curriculum for World Literature, World Cultures and Languages. The
author of a chosen book will spend a day at the high school and an
evening with the community. Other related community events will also
take place.
